Waterfowl
How warm should I dress?

We suggest dressing warmer then you would think. It is better to have it and not need it, then need it and not have it. You can always shed clothing if too warm and put it in your pack.

Do I need hunters orange?

Hunters orange is not necessary or required while waterfowl hunting.

Is it muddy and sloppy ground or firm ground where we hunt?

Depending where we find the best area it can be all of the above so be prepared for either just in case.

What kind of boat are we using and do we hunt in it?

We use a 22ft alumaweld supervee and we do not usually hunt inside of the boat due to the size of the boat and water levels on the river.

What is the duck and goose limit?

Our goose limit is 4 Canada geese a person per day and our duck limit is 7 ducks per person per day.

How long do we hunt for?

We will hunt from daylight until limited out or early afternoon being 1pm-2pm. (Depending how many birds we have left to reach our limit, we may extend hunt time.)

Can I bring my dog?

We do not allow clients to bring there personal dog due to safety concerns and to ensure that we maximize opportunities for our hunters.

Can I bring my child, friend, wife ect?

ou are more then welcome to bring another person if they choose to just watch our hunt for an additional $100. Therefore they do not need a license or federal stamp they will also need the required essentials from the checklist to stay warm and dry to prolong our hunt.

Will you clean the birds after the hunt?

We are happy to clean birds for our clients at a additional charge of $2 per bird or for no charge we will show you how to clean a bird so you can do them yourself.

Can I bring my duck/goose calls and call at birds with you?

We are happy to help teach our hunters the how-to’s of calling during our hunt. With that said, ask your guide when the appropriate times are to practice/learn so that we can still ensure maximum hunt potential.

What choke should I use in my shotgun?

We suggest using a modified choke for newer hunters. If you are a seasoned hunter and shoot often then we suggest a full choke.

Should I use 3 1/2 inch shot shells?

While you are more then welcome to shoot 3 1/2 inch shells we suggest you do not. 2 3/4 or 3 inch shells are proven to pattern better and have 50% less recoil then 3 1/2 inch shells. As long as you are on target the bird will fold regardless of the size of shell.

Should I wear earplugs?

You are welcome to wear earplugs if you would like but you are not required too.

What to expect on your hunt:

On the day of your hunt we will meet at the launch ramp closest to the area chosen by your guide. Meeting times vary throughout the season but usually 2 hours before shooting light/first light is the adequate amount of time to get to the blind and start the set up process. After a quick boat ride in our 23ft alumaweld Columbia we will arrive at the blind and start to unload gear. Once all the gear is unloaded on the bank your guide will leave you momentarily to hide/anchor the boat and will then return in our aqua pod (kayak). After returning we will then start to set up decoys and get our blind put together and get brushed in. Once decoys are deployed and blind is set and brushed, we wait for our shoot time and let the action begin!

2023-2024 Hunting Forecast

The 2023-2024 waterfowl season is set to open October 14th and we are anticipating another great season. Bird numbers are looking good and we are geared up with new rigs on the decoys and lots of hours dog training. We will primarily be spending our time on the lower Columbia this season but have some very fine property we are preparing for next season. Whether you are an avid hunter or just getting into waterfowl hunting, this year is not one you will want to miss. Our preseason scouting trips have been very successful finding thousands of wigeon, teal, pintail and mallards working their way up the Columbia river system. It is a common misconception that January (our last month of season) is the best month of hunting in our area but our early season hunting is truly hard to beat. We always enjoy hunting with new hunters so join Top Guides NW in the blind to create an experience you will not soon forget.
